Revolutionizing Playing Card Design: Alexander Chin's Award-Winning Creation

2017 National Card Collection Day Decks: A Game-Changer in the World of Playing Cards

Renowned designer Alexander Chin has redefined the concept of playing cards with his innovative design for the 2017 National Card Collection Day decks. This design, which has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Packaging Design Award, has transformed playing cards from mere toys to fine art.

The inspiration behind this design was the newly created holiday, the 2017 Playing Card Collection Day, which celebrates the art of playing cards and their collectors worldwide. To create more awareness and community for the holiday, Chin released a set of limited edition decks featuring innovative packaging designs and unusual print methods, resulting in a much-talked-about user experience.

The unique properties of these decks lie in their innovative new box design, dubbed the Pluck Tuck. Printed with gold intaglio plates onto pearlescent stock, the boxes have an exterior friction sleeve that allows users to easily pluck the top or bottom half to reveal the cards inside. This design not only epitomizes the craft of card design but also changes market views of playing cards from toys to fine art.

These decks were realized using luxury materials of pearlescent stock and gold intaglio printing. Each box boasts the craftsmanship of hand assembly and individual numbering. The package focuses on duality with an exterior/interior and top/bottom relationship with itself. The exterior sleeves feature the quatrefoil design in fine outline while the inner box highlights large gold fills to show where the user should pull to open the box.

These decks were exhibited in Kentucky at the 52 Plus Joker Playing Card Convention and later released to the public on the actual holiday, October 17th, worldwide. The design process involved a focus on creating a package design that would gain media attention and have users rethink their interactions with these cards to create memorable moments.

Despite the challenge of producing the boxes with minimal press runs, a cleverly designed single engraving plate for both the top and bottom box halves was created. Interior panel flaps were created to increase package structure and allowed for interior printed designs without needing a secondary plate. Multiple colors were utilized to give variety while still keeping it within the same print run.

In conclusion, Alexander Chin's innovative design for the 2017 National Card Collection Day decks has revolutionized the concept of playing cards. His design, which has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Packaging Design Award, has not only transformed playing cards from mere toys to fine art but has also created a unique user experience that has been much talked about worldwide.
